RADICI ERRANTI/
wandering roots

master thesis project/
PHOTOGRAPHY/ book design

“Wandering Roots”, or “Radici Erranti” in italian, is a visual exploration of my Japanese roots through the medium of photography. It explores the topics of identity, mixed-ethnicity and dual heritage.

Born in northern Italy from Italian-Japanese parents but without ever being exposed to Japanese culture, growing up, I felt the need to give voice to my Japanese self. Through the re-enactment of gestures and symbols typical of the Japanese culture, and the recovery of past memories, this project attempts to reconcile the dual nature of my roots. Wandering through places from my past and present life in Italy, Switzerland and Spain, I embark on a journey of self-discovery, touching on topics such as the passage of time, the transitory nature of life and the ambivalence of our human condition.

The final body of work was consolidated throught the medium of the book.
