CELEBRATING UNIQUENESS WITH

EDITORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY /
MAGAZINE DESIGN

Yuumy Peralta is a Japanese jewelry designer based in Barcelona. Born in Tokyo, Japan, she has very early discovered her passion for travelling and for exploring different cultures and ways of living. She spent several years living between Argentina, Spain and Indonesia. Over the years, she matured a strong interest and passion for making jewelry. Her jewelry line is colourful, energetic and vibrant. She creates handmade accessories with gems and stones collected from all over the world during her travels. Each piece is handmade and unique. As Yuumi said “being unique is something hard. Especially in Japanese culture, society wants us all to conform, to fit into a standard. This is also the reason why I make unique items. A big part of my clients are Japanese so with my jewellery I want to make them feel unique and special. When you find your favorite accessory, it makes you happy. And whenever you wear it, you feel joyful and a little more confident, a little stronger. I want my customers to feel like that when wearing my accessories”.

My concept for this editorial is to share Yuumy’s story and emphasise the concept of uniqueness behind her jewelry line. In particular, I wanted to reinforce her line’s message through a strong use of colours for both styling and magazine design: every person, as every colour, is unique. For the photographic tone, I was Inspired by the style of Apartmento magazines where the featured character is photographed at home in an informal setting. I wanted to portray Yuumy in the real space where she creates her accessories. I decided to portray her in a very spontaneous and natural way but at the same time using bold colours for clothing and jewelry. I wanted the photographic style to be natural but at the same time evoking feelings of confidence and empowerment. I also mixed digital and film to give a more “real” feeling to the photos.
